Species Information
General:
Perennial, tufted herb from inconspicuous rhizomes and fibrous roots; stems 10-40 cm tall.
Leaves:
Sheaths purplish below, somewhat flaring upwards; blades lacking.
Flowers:
Spikes solitary, terminal, flattened, linear to egg-shaped, subtended by a single basal bract almost or quite encircling the top of the stem, 0.5-1.4 cm long, several-flowered.
Fruits:
Scales 3.5-5.5 mm long, purplish-black to purplish-brown with translucent margins and lighter midribs; perianth bristles 4 to 6; stigmas 2; achenes lens-shaped, 1.3-1.8 mm long, pitted, the pits in longitudinal rows, the tubercles egg-shaped, slightly smaller than the achenes and about as wide.
